Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, Engineer Research and Development Center, US Army Corps of Engineers Publication_Date: 20050224 Title: 1920 Aerial Photography of the Atlantic Coast of New Jersey from Cape May to Sea Bright and Sandy Hook, United States of America Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: remote-sensing images TIFF format, raster images, 600 x 600 dpi and JPEG format, raster images, 300 x 300 dpi. Description: Abstract: These are black and white aerial photographs of the Atlantic coast of New Jersey. Photograph date is believed to be 1920, based on hand-written notation on some of the storage envelopes. In addition, photo 012 shows Turtle Gut Inlet to be open, and the inlet closed naturally in 1921. Source of original images: photographic archives of the Beach Erosion Board (predecessor of the former Coastal Engineering Research Center), presently stored at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, Engineer Research and Development Center, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA. Original image condition: variable. These prints look like they were made quickly because many of the negatives are crooked on the photographic paper. Most are low contrast and show fading and discoloration. Printed on single-weight glossy paper. The printing date is unknown. Purpose: These historical photographs have been scanned and digital files produced. The files will be available for researchers and coastal managers to analyze shoreline change, urbanization trends, wetland loss, transportation patterns, coastal protection structures, and geomorphic changes. Supplemental_Information: A storm called "the great sleet storm of 1920" occurred 6 Feb 1920. The photographs were taken somewhat later because all the snow is gone, even in obvious shadow areas. It is presumed that they were flown about 2 weeks later from the recovery berms on the beaches. Flight was from south to north. No frames between Sea Bright and Sandy Hook have been found. Total number of frames is 194. Frames 087 to 090 were duplicate coverage and have not been included in the archive. These files have not been orthorectified or projected.
