Description:
Abstract:
These are black and white aerial photographs of the Fire Island Inlet area of Long Island, New York. Photograph date is 20 August, 1937. Source of original images: photographic archives of the Beach Erosion Board (predecessor of the former Coastal Engineering Research Center), presently stored at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, Engineer Research and Development Center, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA. Photographs have been cut and mosaiced onto cardboard backing. Original image condition: variable. Most of the paper prints are well-preserved, with minimal discoloration or staining. On many frames, beaches are overexposed and do not show many features or texture. Photographs were mosaiced at an unknown date. No documentation is available stating if a study was published using these images. Scanned images are shown with part of the cardboard backing.
Purpose:
These historical photographs have been scanned and digital files produced. The files will be available for researchers and coastal managers to analyze shoreline change, urbanization trends, wetland loss, transportation patterns, coastal protection structures, and geomorphic changes.
Supplemental_Information:
These files have not been orthorectified or projected. The images are numbered sequentially from west to east, Fire Island first, then proceeding east to Saltaire. Identification label shows: VI 876K 97th)(8-20-37-11:55A) (12-8400) FIRE ISLAND COAST EROSION. This indicates 12 inch lens at 8,400 ft altitude.

Process_Description:
The black and white photographs were converted to TIFF images at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi using a UMAX PowerLook 2100XL scanner with MagicScan software. Some images appear dark when viewed on the computer screen, but the original prints were scanned to emphasize beach features for the purpose of shoreline mapping. We have tried to retain textures on the beaches. Contrast adjustments: Total tonal range based on the histogram of pixel intensity for overall photographic image (backing and borders excluded). Typically, the low, mid, and high values settings were set automatically by software.
