These images feature the Fire Island Inlet of Long Island.

Photograph dates: June 1, 1936.

Image Source: Beach Erosion Board archives stored at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA..

Aerial flight service: Believed to be U. S. Army Air Corps, Mitchel Field, NY (based on labels on other Long Island photographs from the same era - altitude unknown).

Identification Label: V 597-19-876-8 (6-1-36-10:29A) (12-6000)

Mosaic: Most of the paper prints are well-preserved, with minimal discoloration or staining. Photographs mosaiced at an unknown date. No documentation is available stating if a study was published using these images. Mosaiced images are shown with part of the cardboard backing.

Scanner: UMAX Powerlook 2100XL

Resolution: 600 x 600 dpi, 256 Gray Scale

Scanning By: Mr. Doyle Jones, 18 Nov - 4 Dec 2002

File Names: Based on date and image number, with location description if applicable. The images are numbered sequentially from west to east starting with northernmost flight line.

Contrast adjustments: Total tonal range based on the histogram of pixel intensity for overall photographic image (backing and borders excluded). Typically, the low, mid, and high values buttons were set automatically. Then the mid-tone was manually moved along the histogram to emphasize beach features.

Note: Some images appear dark when viewed on the computer screen, but the original prints were scanned to emphasize beach features for the purpose of shoreline mapping. We have tried to retain textures on the beaches.
